5B FITNESS: A PROGRAM THAT WILL ENHANCE YOUR LONGEVITY

I have recently modified my own exercise and fitness regimens to increase my functionality and decrease the effects of aging. I call it the 5B because its emphasis is on 5 areas that begin with B: Breathing; Blood Flow; Balance; Brain Activity; and Boosting Metabolism. (I know the last one's a stretch.) Deep breathing or diaphragmatic breathing offers increased oxygen flow through the body and this helps optimize the burning of fat as well as increased cellular efficiency. It also helps remove waste products from the body in the form of carbon dioxide. Studies have shown that breathing exercises help reduce anxiety, depression, headaches, and fatigue. Deep breathing may be the easiest way to elicit the Relaxation Response. (More to Come...)

TIPS FOR WEEKEND WARRIORS

If you are an older athlete, and/or play sports on weekends but don't otherwise exercise regularly, consider these tips from the Mayo Clinic: STAY FLEXIBLE. Stretch your major muscle groups several times per week. GET BUSY. Stay active by walking regularly. FLEX YOUR MUSCLES. Do strength training that involves all major muscle groups at least twice a week. WARM UP. Start activities slowly and always warm up before participating in any sport.
